Hideaway Jazz Cafe
A rare Friday booked off work and what better way to start the day, than a bite to eat in Streatham’s newest cafe. Hideaway Jazz Cafe is the new street front cafe to the well regarded but less accessible Hideaway Club.
The decor is well thought out (lots of wall high pictures of jazz musicians) bright but welcoming. The music is jazz as you would guess, and very good jazz at that. It was a weekday at 10 o clock in the morning, and as such the clientele consisted of moms catching up and a few others reading the newspapers provided by the cafe and having a coffee.
I went for a cappuccino and a veggie breakfast, both excellent and priced about right. The staff working there were welcoming and efficient, and I got some nice free Hideaway branded nick knacks. The evening menu looks good if a little pricey, I spotted a few different types of burgers and steaks, but there is a lot more on there.
They have live music and comedy nearly every day of the week, and I certainly plan to go back for it.
Value for money: Not too bad for breakfast, although the evening menu looked a bit pricier.
Best for: relaxing with some good food and very good music.
How to get there: From BC - walk lazybones! It’s very close to Streatham Rail Station.
Address: 227 Streatham High Road, Streatham, London, SW16 2ED

Kennedy's
Who would have thought that Streatham could have the best fish and chip shop in London?
Having eaten at some top fish and chip restaurants in my years I am confident to say that this place is producing the finest chips in the land. Add to that some wonderfully battered fish, home-made mighty pies, slow grilled real sausages, awesome pasties and hand-made cricket ball sized fishcakes this chippy deserves a medal.
Actually one of two in London, the other up near Finsbury, there are always customers. The service is quick and friendly. There are a couple of places to sit and eat but this is a takeaway restaurant. The prices are excellent.
Best for: British fish and chips!
Address: 5 Leigham Court Rd, Streatham Hill, SW16 2ND
How to get there: A walk down Leigham Court Road or catch the 417 to Streatham Hill Station.

Perfect Blend
One of the best places for breakfast in Streatham. The breakfasts are very big, whether you fancy a fry up with some freshly squeezed orange juice or perhaps pancakes with maple syrup and a cappuccino. You have a choice whether to relax on a sofa, sit at a table or dine al fresco, although the A23 isn’t to everybody’s taste.
The lunches and evening meals are pretty good too, and it turns into a bar at night. It is a great place to dip into after a long day at work because of it's proximity to the train station and Leigham Court Road.
The food and atmosphere always seem good. Perfect Blend have indeed managed to put laid back breakfast, chilled out coffee, great tasting food and sophisticated bar all in one place. The perfect blend no matter what time of day.
Value for money: Not too bad from what I can remember, it doesn’t stand out as particularly pricey or cheap.
Best for: Everything!
How to get there: Walk, or jump on the 417. It is opposite Streatham Hill station.
Address: Perfect Blend, 12 Streatham High Road, Streatham, SW16
Phone: 020 8769 4646
Open: Monday - Saturday - 7.30 - 11pm, Sundays 7.30 - 10.30pm

Talay Thai
Talay Thai is a simple little Thai restaurant and take-away on the high road just south of Streatham Hill station. Although the parasols hanging from the ceiling do little to hide the polystyrene tiles behind it has an authentically Thai feel and the food is fantastic.
A favourite with the locals and good value; it is definitely worth a visit. Valentine’s day is a particularly fun experience, as the staff deck out the restaurant in an abundance of typically south-east Asian cheesy-romantic decorations and giggle behind their hands at all the dates. It’s all very endearing – enjoy!
Best Thai in town!
How to get there: Walk, or jump on the 417 and alight at Streatham Hill station. The restaurant is on the high road 5 mins down on the right hand side.

Negril
If Caribbean food is your thing, then this is the place to go. The food is tasty, generous and therefore comforting.
The clientele is a mix of people just starting a night off or those looking for just a good place to eat with friends. In the summer it’s great to sit outside, but make sure you book on weekend nights.
You will find all your Caribbean favourites, the dishes I tend to go for are jerk chicken roti or tender goat curry, both usually accompanied with a generous side of fried plantain.
The restaurant isn’t licensed, so don't forget to bring your own beer or wine. This could save you a few pounds if you are planning on having a few. They also have a neighbouring Cafe of the same name in Balham, which is great for breakfast and lunch.
Value for money – very good (mains courses £7.95-£9. They are unlicensed and corkage is £2.50 per person)
Best for: Great homely Caribbean food and a good lively atmosphere.
How to get there: Midway down Brixton Hill, so perhaps jump on the 417 towards Clapham Common and get off before the Crown and Sceptre on the corner of Streatham Place and Christchursh Road to walk the last 10 mins.
Address: Negril, 132 Brixton Hill, SW2 1RS
Telephone: 020 8674 8798
